Incidentally, the film score is by James Horner, who also did the music for Avatar and Titanic. If you’re absolutely not up for the live-action adaptation with Jim Carrey, you can also try the animated film from 2018.

2. Miracle on 34th Street, 1994
Little Susan doesn’t believe (or only a little) in Santa Claus. In the end, money plays the decisive role. Mara Wilson (the girl who plays Matilda in Matilda) is as cute as ever in this movie and if you’ve only ever seen Richard Attenborough (the brother of Sir David Attenborough, yes, THE nature documentary commentator!) in Jurassic Park, you should definitely put this Christmas movie on your to-watch list. The ending is very, very wholesome.

3. Terry Pratchett’s Hogfather, 2006
The first live-action adaptation of a Discworld novel. The Hogfather, the Discworld equivalent of Santa Claus, has disappeared. So that the sun can rise again the next morning, Death takes his place and assumes his duties. Susan, Death’s granddaughter (apparently a particularly popular name in Christmas movies) has to find out what happened. You can expect 189 minutes of concentrated Christmas spirit, the movie is fun and pretty weird – Terry Pratchett! Incidentally, the master himself also makes a guest appearance in his movie.

4. The Holiday, 2006
Despite the strange German title, this is a wonderful Christmas movie about Iris (Kate Winslet) and Amanda (Cameron Diaz), who are both unhappy and decide to swap their homes for Christmas, swapping a luxury mansion in L.A. for a cozy cottage in England. Love Needs No Holidays is wonderfully cozy and shows how different the Christmas season can look in different places around the world and, above all, how something beautiful can emerge from chaos and sadness if you are open to it. Bonus: There’s a cute white dog. Disadvantage: It makes you want to live in a cottage in England right away.

5. Home Alone, 1990
…must not be missing, of course! The youngest of the McCallisters is forgotten at home by his family who are away for Christmas (unbelievable every time) and has to put burglars to flight. Very bad and best to cover your eyes: The scene in which Kevin makes himself macaroni cheese, even lights candles for dinner, but then forgets the time and LEAVES EVERYTHING JUST LIKE THAT. Fun fact: In the second part (Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, 1992), Donald Trump makes a guest appearance lasting several seconds, which makes you smile a little.

6. Christmas Vacation, 1989
We keep the 80s / 90s feeling and pay a visit to the Griswolds (I already mentioned them). The pre-Christmas period at their house is chaotic, hectic and stressful, because the whole family is coming to visit and family man Clark (Chevy Chase, you can only like him) has taken it into his head to organize the perfect party. Find out in these wonderfully entertaining 93 minutes whether this works and that a movie can actually deliver THE perfect Christmas playlist (without Mariah Carey)!

7. Klaus, 2019
Letter carrier Jesper is given the task of ensuring that letters are written again in the small town of Smeerensburg. He gets help from the fishmonger Alva, little Márgu from the Sami people and the eerie hermit Klaus (who is voiced by Rufus Beck in the German dubbing). I was pleasantly surprised by this unusual, touching and Spanish (!) animated film.

8. Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella (Tři oříšky pro Popelku, 1973)
Cinderella, as her most loyal fans affectionately call her, has been dancing, riding and escaping across TV screens for exactly 50 years. That means you definitely can’t avoid this year’s anniversary rewatch. But just between you and me: have any of you ever really watched the whole movie in full concentration? You often do something on the side, don’t you? Or do you seriously watch the hunting scene? If so, tell me, does the fox die, or is it safe to watch?

9. The Santa Clause, 1994
A stumble arose! There are at least three parts here, but the first 45 to 60 minutes of the first part are particularly recommendable – after that it gets kind of wild. Scott Calvin becomes the new Santa Claus through an unexpected contract and is initially as overwhelmed by this task as a first-year student at the media campus in search of a functioning toilet. Interesting fact: The English title The Santa Clause actually translates more as „The Santa Clause“ and refers to the contract that Scott Calvin signs at the beginning of the film. This play on words is completely lost in the German movie title!

10. Little Lord Fauntleroy, 1980
Well, the devil take me if this movie doesn’t make at least one or two of you cry! Of course I’m talking about the film version with Ricky Schroder and Sir (!) Alec Guinness. Little Cedric Errol must take up his aristocratic inheritance and travels from New York to England to become the new lord of his grandfather’s earldom (classic sudden-princess storyline, but way better, believe me). Looking away at the part where the black and white dog limps through Earls Lane (anyone know if he was taught to do that? Was he just playing at it? Is he okay???) and turn up the volume when they dance to „Golden Slippers“ at the Christmas party. There is no happier song!

11. Two Santas, 2008
A German Christmas comedy starring – HALT, please continue reading – Bastian Pastewka and Christoph Maria Herbst. Hilmar Kess and Tillmann Dilling („the ringing spice“) fight their way from Vienna to Berlin at Christmas time via… well, detours. Fun fact: The film was originally supposed to be shot entirely in Germany, but because there wasn’t enough snow in 2008, filming was moved to Lapland. Those in the know may also spot a Stromberg easteregg.

Unfortunately there is no trailer on YouTube, but trust me, it’s worth it!

12. It’s a Wonderful Life, 1946
The Christmas movie of Christmas movies. George Bailey believes that his life no longer has any meaning, and the angel Clarence (voiced in German by the great Manfred Steffen) shows him what the world would be like without him. Like the Christmas story, only with a nice Scrooge. The film is not colorful (quite the opposite), shrill, loud or action-packed, but it is beautiful and loaded with the perfect amount of kitsch. No eye will remain dry here, at the latest when it says: „A man who has friends is never a failure!“

13. Christmas at home (Hjem til jul, 2019)
A cozy Christmas village, sleigh rides and lots of love confusion? You get all that in „Christmas at Home“, a Norwegian dramedy series in two seasons. You have two seasons to really wallow in the magic of Scandinavian Christmas. The protagonist is Johanne (you can’t help but love her), who is under pressure from her parents because she can’t turn up to the family Christmas party „unaccompanied again“. Johanne now has 24 days to find a boyfriend to bring with her on Christmas Eve. Fun fact: The film is set in the small Norwegian town of Røros, where the Christmas episodes of Pippi Longstocking were filmed back in the day!

Giveaway
You can still get your presents in January if you answer the following question by e-mail (media@asta-hda.de) by December 20, 2023:

What movie is Rusty watching when the family visit arrives at the Griswolds‘ house?

All correct answers will be entered into a draw to win a little surprise, which you will receive in January.
