Man spricht darüber sehr viel.

English version (automated translation):

Situationship nightmare? British actress and screenwriter Phoebe Waller-Bridge has created a character in the series of the same name, „Fleabag“, who struggles through her chaotic life in a strong and likeable manner in the first season. Occasionally, however, it bursts out of her how lost and guilty she feels most of the time. She has a terrible feeling of being a perverted, selfish, apathetic, cynical, spoiled and morally broken person who can’t even call herself a feminist. She is haunted by the death of her best friend, the strange relationship dynamics in her family and the issue of men. She never lasts long in relationships, yet she can’t do without them. She has long since given up her dream of the perfect relationship.

The fourth wall
The special thing about the series is the breaking of the fourth wall – a principle that originally comes from the theater. In fact, „Fleabag“ was originally a play – a kind of one-woman show. In most productions, the three walls of the theater stage are supplemented by an imaginary fourth wall between the actors and actresses and the audience. The wall is transparent to the audience, but not to the other side. The actors in the story are therefore unaware that they are being watched and ignore the audience. In „Fleabag“ it is different, because the protagonist regularly talks to the audience and comments on her life in the knowledge that someone is always watching and judging her.

The priest
The second season of „Fleabag“ is a love story. Fleabag meets someone with a similar relationship to the fourth wall. The priest is also aware that he is being watched and that his every action is being judged – by God. When Fleabag and the priest meet, she has just sworn off men and initially keeps her distance, but cannot resist the temptation for long. It gets closer, then uncomfortably close. Right from the start, everyone knows that this relationship is not a good idea. Her sister knows it, her therapist knows it and Fleabag herself knows it too, while at home she googles whether Catholic priests are allowed to have sex. The audience also sees repeated signs that the love story is not going to work out. Nevertheless, there are always those moments in between when everyone believes in a happy ending. Something prevails that is stronger than doubt: hope.

Imbalance
Although „Fleabag“ is just a story, anyone who has ever been in a situation can relate to this dynamic. Two people get to know each other and become closer, but something stands between them. Maybe one is in an open relationship, maybe the other is simply living out their freedom. Maybe one person is afraid of commitment, maybe the other doesn’t feel like taking on responsibility. There are many constellations, one outwardly more complicated than the other. Nevertheless, there are feelings at play that somehow hold the whole construct together. As long as there is a lot of communication and the feelings don’t change, this form of non-relationship can work well for both parties. But it rarely does. Sooner or later, an imbalance arises.

Hope
Dating someone in an open relationship is not the same as falling in love with a Catholic priest, but at the beginning of both stories it is clear that it will not be easy. Each of us is the protagonist in our own story, and at the same time each of us is a spectator in the stories of the others. If every Situationship were set on a theater stage today, the audience would first think: „This won’t end well.“ But then they would let themselves be carried away by hope. And if the protagonists of the situationships could break through the fourth wall and talk to the audience in the same way, they might say: „I know it’s a stupid idea, but let’s see where it leads.“ Where it leads is rarely really predictable and that makes us unsure. As often as situationships are conducted these days, the question arises: why are we doing this to ourselves?

Love
At the end of the second season of „Fleabag“, the priest gives a speech about love. In the German translation, it sounds like this: „Love is horrible. It is painful. It scares you. It leads to self-doubt. You condemn yourself for it. You distance yourself from the other people in your life. You become selfish. You become creepy. You become obsessed with your hairstyle. You become brutal. You do and say things because of them that you would never have expected of yourself. We don’t want anything else, but when we love, it’s hell. So it’s no wonder we definitely don’t want to do it alone. I’ve learned that if you’re born with love, you have to decide what you’re going to do with it. People talk about it a lot. It feels right and that’s why it’s easy. I’m not sure if that’s true. It takes strength to know what is right. And love is not for people who are weak. Because if you’re a romantic, you need a hell of a lot of hope.“

Perhaps that is precisely the reason why so many situationships exist – we are romantics. We dream of a future together and we hope that everything will work out the way we want it to. But dreams of a perfect relationship sometimes just don’t come true. One of the many things we can learn from „Fleabag“ is this: If Fleabag can leave the scene with her head held high after her defeat, then so can everyone who has lost a love recently.

Taxiteller & Adorno: Schlussverkauf Bildung Konferenz in Oer-Erkenschwick25.
