https://open.spotify.com/intl-de/album/0S0KGZnfBGSIssfF54WSJh?si=FafEbIqtT3yFNp6-dpnjCA

When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go – Experience“.

English version (automated translation):

Musical nightmare party by Billie Eilish – A music analysis

by Lisa Rupprecht (03.01.2024)

A visit to the dentist, a car accident, spiders crawling out of your mouth and a terrible nightmare – what do these seemingly disparate experiences have in common? It comprises 14 songs and has a total running time of around 42 minutes. Among them are the intro „!!!!!!!“, which humorously introduces the beginning of the album recordings to the audience, the outro „goodbye“, which is a summary of the entire album and presents a series of short excerpts from the various songs.

Illustration: Margo Sibel Koneberg

Billie Eilish’s hit „Bad Guy“ spent 66 weeks in the charts, went platinum in Germany and won the Grammy for Song of the Year. Whether on the radio, on TikTok, Instagram or on television: It was simply everywhere. When the album was released, Billie Eilish was just 17 years old. The Los Angeles-born artist had already experienced huge hype at the age of 14 with the release of her single „Ocean Eyes“, and the song now has 1.2 billion streams.

Sleep problems as inspiration
Eilish’s musical trajectory has made her a symbol of our generation, comparable to the influence Justin Bieber had in Eilish’s own youth. I first saw Billie Eilish live at a concert at the Gibson in Frankfurt in 2019, before the release of her first studio album. Even then, she performed a few songs from the album, including „You Should See Me in a Crown“, the song that got the floor shaking and everyone screaming. After the concert, the album was more than just music to me. It became my companion in difficult times and made me feel like I wasn’t alone with my sleep problems. Suddenly I was no longer going through sleepless nights alone, but with Billie’s sounds in my ears. I didn’t care that her music wasn’t exactly the most relaxing at the time. Every Billie Eilish song has its own mood and should feel different to the listeners.

Music meets art meets reality
Shortly after the release of her first album, Billie came up with something very special for her fans. For one week, she opened the „When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go – Experience“ in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to visit the exhibition in L.A. myself, but there were lots of videos on the Internet about it, which I watched with enthusiasm. In each room of this exhibition, a song from the album was presented in a unique way – with different colors, textures, temperatures and shapes to capture the atmosphere of each song. The song „Xanny“, which is about smoking and drug use by friends, features a deep bass in the chorus, emphasized by the lyrics: „I’m in their second hand smoke“. The corresponding room in the exhibition filled with a dense fog precisely to this line. There were even real (!) puppies running around in the room for the song „8“! Although they don’t appear in the lyrics, they created a certain atmosphere in the room. Between Eilish’s high notes and the gentle sound of the ukulele, the visitors were able to distract themselves from the sad lyrics of the song with the help of the puppies. The song is about abandonment and unrequited love: „Cause who am I to be in love when your love never is for me?“

The exhibition was like a creative journey through the music of Billie Eilish. For fans, the installation not only created a visual and sensory connection to the songs, but also deepened their understanding of Billie Eilish’s artistic vision.

Dentist sounds create the perfect horror
The music on Eilish’s first studio album sounds different from her earlier songs. That’s because Brother Finneas uses simple beats, dark melodies and a new overall sound on the album. The songs on the album are very varied, sometimes quiet and intimate, then again very powerful. Unusual sounds are integrated into the hits. In the song „Bury a friend“, for example, a dentist’s electric file is inserted into the chorus to create an unpleasant feeling. These details are no coincidence.

Billie Eilish talks about her personal experiences and thoughts on her album in the documentary „The World’s a Little Blurry“ on Apple TV: „Every song on the album represents something that can happen to you in your sleep: Sleep paralysis, night terrors, nightmares, lucid dreams. All the things that no one has an explanation for. I was always terrified of the night and couldn’t sleep, all my dreams are lucid, so I can control them. I know I’m dreaming while I’m dreaming. Sometimes the things in my dreams actually happen the next day. It’s really crazy. On the album, I don’t describe what I dreamed, but how it felt.“

Of sleep paralysis and lucid dreams
The album is not only a unique work of art due to its diverse musical composition, but also due to the emotional depth of the lyrics. Eilish had set herself the goal of describing a state associated with sleep in each song. For example, sleep paralysis – a sleep disorder in which the head is awake and the senses function but the body cannot move – was the focus of her album. One example of this is the song „Bury a Friend“, which is about a monster that lurks under the bed and watches you while you are paralyzed. Lines like „Then my limbs all froze and my eyes won’t close“ reflect the oppressive atmosphere of this phenomenon.

In some interviews, Eilish said that she didn’t know what exactly she was experiencing at first. She also shared her personal experiences with nightmares that plagued her on many nights. Eilish often experiences her nightmares as lucid, i.e. as dreams during which you realize that you are in a dream and can then actively influence it. Her song „ilomilo“ is about the emotional ups and downs of losing a loved one and then finding them again – as if she was playing a game in which she seems to be in control. With the words „I can’t lose another life“, she describes how the actions in her dreams seem authentic, but at the same time she knows that her life is not really in danger.

If you look at all the songs on the album, it is noticeable that the last three convey a special message: „Listen before I go“, „I love you“ and „goodbye“. As if in a farewell letter, Billie sends her listeners off.

So have a good night, and may your dreams be just as rousing as Billie Eilish’s musical nightmare party!

Taxiteller & Adorno: Schlussverkauf Bildung Konferenz in Oer-Erkenschwick25.
