English version (automated translation):

About escaping, writing and dreaming

by Louisa Albert (13.03.2024)

Slafa Kafi was nine years old when the civil war began in her homeland of Syria. Now she is 21, studying dentistry in Erlangen, and when you google her name, the first results are two books with her name on them. „I’ve always wanted to write books since I was a child. My dad used to read to us before bedtime, mostly short stories that had a moral at the end. I was simply fascinated by the fact that someone had written this text and now I was lying in my bed, listening to it, and actually being prompted to think.“

illustration: Margo Sibel Koneberg

Slafa has only fond memories of her childhood in northeastern Syria. „I played outside a lot and also rode my bike a lot. I was always accused of being reckless, I was quite wild.“ She laughs. When many people think of „Syria,“ they think of destroyed buildings, torn families, or the „refugee crisis“ (a term Slafa cannot stand), she thinks of a country that has always conveyed a sense of safety to her. But then, in 2011, the first unrest begins. At first, they are only peaceful protests, demanding political reforms, rule of law, freedom, and the resignation of President Bashar al-Assad. But when authorities start to violently suppress the protests, the uprisings spread further, and the conflict between the opposition and the government forces escalates into a civil war that continues to this day.

Slafa, then nine years old, also feels the changing mood in the country. Power outages, endless news, everything in her city revolves around one topic. „Syrian children had to grow up very fast,“ she notes almost soberly. „We are all older than we actually are.“ Although the conflict is still relatively fresh, the thought of fleeing hangs in the air unspoken. It takes shape when Slafa’s mother starts a conversation with „What if…“ during a visit to the grandparents, and shortly thereafter, regular visitors come to Slafa’s house. Acquaintances and relatives of her father. „Then it was already said: You have the visa and now you have to pack,“ Slafa recounts. Amidst all the chaos, a small miracle for the family, but it was also clear at that time: „Either we take a safe route or we stay.“ The announced packing then takes place within two days, only the most important things are allowed. For Slafa, that’s her Quran. „I was already going to the mosque to learn the Quran as a little child in Syria. At some competition, I had won a cash prize and I bought my own Quran with that money. I still read from it today. I had only one personal backpack and I put this Quran in it, it was very important to me.“

Especially one sura has accompanied Slafa for a long time. „‚After hardship comes ease.‘ This is my principle in life. My faith is, so to speak, my standard. In difficult situations, it is often the only reason to continue.“

With the visa in her pocket, Slafa, her parents, and her brother set off for the capital Damascus in 2012. Over 3000 kilometers separate the family from their destination. They travel by train to Jordan, then by plane to Vienna, and from there by train to Germany. The following year they will spend in a refugee camp, first in Munich, then in the Lindau district. Then follows the move to their first own four walls in the new country. Lindenberg in Bavaria becomes Slafa’s new home, where she attends her first primary school nearby. As different as it was from Syria, the now ten-year-old Slafa does not perceive it that way, only one thing stands out. „I did not know the language. That was the decisive difference, and that was also the very first goal I had: I must learn proper German.“

The support classes are not enough for her, constantly new classmates join and words like table and pencil are translated again. After class, she has her teacher explain the four cases to her. She still owns the sheet of paper, she says, and it sounds a bit proud. Shortly thereafter, the transition to secondary school is on the agenda, Slafa wants to go to grammar school. The German education system throws a spanner in the works. Because she has not attended a German school for a full year, she lacks meaningful grades, and without them, the path leads to the secondary school. „If my mom had not intervened back then, my entire educational path would have been different.“ Her mother seeks out the principal, presses on, and does not give up. With success. Slafa is allowed to take some exams and makes the jump to her desired school. „These are situations that have remained in my mind,“ she explains. „That my parents support me unconditionally was ultimately the first and most important step for the entire development.“ Not everyone believed in her. „I heard from some that you will not make it to grammar school, our children were born here and did not make it, how are you supposed to make it in a year?“

Prejudices encounter her time and again, although less often than friends and acquaintances, but some comments still stick. „Eventually you become immune to it. And then there are days when it hurts you more, even after ten years. I don’t like it when people tell me: You speak German very well. You can’t hear it with me, I could have been born here, so conversely, this statement means: For how you look, you speak good German.“ In Germany, Slafa tries to focus on the here and now, but the thought of Syria and the relatives and friends left behind cannot always be shaken off. She is 14 when the early childhood dream comes back to her. Writing, publishing a book, becoming an author. „I thought to myself, I’m sitting here, sure, I’m somewhat okay, but in the end, when people talk, they also mean me.“

It clicks, and suddenly it’s there: The desire to make a difference, to counter what „people“ say. Slafa starts writing and initially shows her texts only to her best friend. Later to her German teacher. And he immediately sees potential. He asks Slafa if she would like to publish her texts and hold a reading, and she agrees. She receives support not only from her parents and her teacher but also from her best friend and the rest of the class. Without Slafa’s knowledge, they design flyers, and when the release of her second book is thwarted by the coronavirus, they organize a surprise party.

With her books, Slafa wants to prompt reflection. „With my first book, I was 14, I didn’t have the courage to write about Syria. I felt that people would see parallels to my life, so it’s all a bit more fictional. With the second book, I finally had the courage to talk about our situation. It’s about Yasmin from a child’s perspective, and she talks about her life.“ A life that, like Slafa’s, is characterized by three phases: Life in Syria, the turning point through the war, and the subsequent new life in Germany. Especially with her second book, which she publishes on her 18th birthday, Slafa wants to draw a different picture of Syria than the one many people here confront.

„I would still describe Syria as my original homeland. I believe the ten years there were the only period in my life so far when I felt I didn’t have to worry about being different. We were very different in Syria. Different religions, different people, that was completely normal. You can’t say that about Germany, even if you were born here. The feeling of home arises from being in a place where you are simply a part of it, no matter how different you are.“ However, Slafa does not want to travel to Syria yet. „I’m afraid that I will no longer feel a sense of belonging. In terms of mentality, I probably don’t think the same way as the people who live there anymore. Now it’s kind of an identity crisis.“ A problem she is not alone in facing. „In every circle where young people with a migration background meet, identity crisis is the first topic. Everyone goes through it. But I would claim that of all the people I have talked to about it, I go through it the least. I arrived relatively early. I would say that Germany is my home.“

A home that, at least in terms of her big dream, has opened many doors for her. After the publication of her first book, she is recommended by another teacher for a talent support center, which is supposed to assist talented students with creative texts. As more inquiries come in, Slafa begins writing her second book at 16 and reaches numerous people. „I am convinced that small changes are at least as important as big ones. That’s what I find most beautiful (in writing): To combat a problem or a prejudice.“ For this reason, Slafa also likes to talk about her story. „It’s simply part of my life. It’s a piece of my identity and what has shaped me. I like to talk about it because I feel it makes a difference.“

However, it is important to her that she is not reduced to her migration background. „You are not just your migration background,“ she emphasizes. Starting anew in a foreign country at ten years old, publishing two books, and then fulfilling the second big dream of studying dentistry – a path that was definitely not always easy to follow. Would she describe herself as optimistic? Slafa laughs. Not an easy question. „Generally, I am very optimistic when I advise or cheer someone up. When it comes to things that concern me, it usually looks a bit different. Subconsciously, I always imagine the worst scenarios. But ultimately, I reach the point where I tell myself that the best will happen and it will work out. Somehow.
