Illustration: Margo Sibel Koneberg

English version (automated translation):

Diving into the Eerie-Beautiful World of Nightmares

by Lisa Rupprecht (10.04.2024)

Attention: You can visit the exhibition at the Hessian State Museum until June 2, 2024. Usually, I am not a big fan of horror movies, and sadly, heavy metal doesn’t excite me either. However, I am fascinated by True Crime, especially the podcasts about it, which made me curious.

Illustration: Margo Sibel Koneberg

I was also skeptical about the timing of the exhibition from March 1 to July 2. During this period, the two most important religious festivals of two major world religions occur: Ramadan for the Muslim and Easter for the Christian community. Even though the central motif of the exhibition is an inverted cross, it’s important to emphasize that, in my opinion, the exhibition was designed respectfully and sensitively to avoid offending anyone. It’s still very important to respect and understand the religious beliefs of others. During Ramadan, Muslims celebrate a time of purification, devotion, and fasting. It’s certainly uncomfortable to be confronted with the devil at such an open and central location as the state museum. The title of the exhibition could be considered inappropriate by members of both communities. Therefore, we should strive to create a culture of mutual respect and tolerance. However, I think it’s important that we engage with the themes of death and the devil, and the exhibition offers a good opportunity for this.

Despite my initial criticism, the entrance to the presentation directly appeals to me. Sculptures by the artist Max Hopper depict skeletons from abstract, moving metal frames – a post-apocalyptic scenario that immediately captivates me. Skeletons are indeed expected when visiting a museum – here, they manage to make the transition interesting and creepy at the same time.

…like in a horror movie
Upon entering the rooms, my gaze first falls on one of the largest paintings in the entire exhibition Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow painted the painting with his students for the Düsseldorf court. With wide-open eyes, the devil stares at me head-on. Naked on a battlefield, with spread wings and a scepter in hand, the figure of the devil is different from what I had imagined, it is human.

The ambiance in the presentation rooms is very dark, illuminated with individual red lights. This makes the rooms and corridors almost frightening and like something out of a horror movie. Impressive and simultaneously oppressive is the painted coffin for a child’s corpse, a sad testament to human transience. The final resting place for an innocent child, adorned with beautiful flowers, Bible verses, and skulls.

Some of the displayed works are inspired by fairy tales, handed-down superstitions, and books. Another painting by Aron Böcklin is based on Greek and Roman mythology and shows Charon, the ferryman of the underworld. Other images reflect the works of Goethe, showing, for example, the journey of Faust and Mephistopheles to the Brocken.

The Cruelty of Human Nature
The gallery leads me through various epochs and styles of art history, showing not only the centuries-old fascination but also the dealing with death over the years. Paintings by Arnold Böcklin and Anton Sohn, for example, show death through diseases such as the plague or cholera and the suffering that resulted from them. The exhibit ‚Death on the Globe‘ by Belgian graphic artist Frans Masereel from 1942 presents an impressive image: A skeleton clinging to a burning and dripping world. It’s easy to imagine that this depiction was inspired by the events of World War II and the cruelties of human nature.

As I continue, I pass through a long corridor where two classics of German horror films are being shown, both are silent films. One is the adaptation of the novel ‚Dracula‘ by Bram Stoker: ‚Nosferatu – A Symphony of Horror‘ by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, released in 1922. The other is the film ‚The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari‘ from 1920, which primarily deals with mental illnesses, visually represented.

Diving into the World of the Supernatural
I move on and come across a particularly impressive representation of the Gothic scene, which began in England in the 1980s. Portraits of various personalities who fully lived out the style of the scene here show a mix of influences from Gothic horror literature and Victorian mourning culture. The dark outfits, exaggerated jewelry, and eerie atmosphere immerse me in a world of the supernatural and mysterious.

Dimitry Smirnov released a portrait of ‚Zombie Boy‘ Rick Genest in 2011, which occupies an entire wall in the exhibition. The model, who had a complete skeleton tattooed on his body, is also known from the music video to Lady Gaga’s song ‚Born This Way.‘ The desire for new and spectacular has made its way into popular culture. From the Monster High doll to the skull chain by Alexander McQueen, the exhibition shows how death and horror have found their firm place in fashion, film, and music.

Death and Devil in Music and Film
A special feature is the presentation of films with trailers and a wall full of movie posters. Works by well-known artists like Tim Burton show how death can be commercialized and made accessible to a wide audience without losing its horror. Films like those by Burton clarify that death doesn’t always have to be shown in a scary context but can also be aesthetically pleasing and understandable for children. Similarly impressive is the musical dimension of the exhibition. From Metallica to Billie Eilish, a variety of artists and bands are presented here, dealing with the themes of ‚Death‘ and ‚Devil.‘ Especially impressive are the vinyl records known for their dark and creepy content, which they also display on their album covers, like Metallica or Slipknot. Music videos from heavy metal bands to pop artists like Lil Nas X are also on display here – because of their sometimes disturbing content.

The Material Sets the Tone
One of the highlights for me is Kris Martin’s work ‚Somebody‘ (2013). Here, a disturbing level is reached because the word ’somebody‘ is written with human ash. This subtle, yet disturbing use of material lends an eerie note to the term and challenges the viewer to think about the meaning of identity and mortality.

Equally perverse I find the staging of a ‚corpse with an erection‘ by Georg Schneider – though the corpse was not real, but made of fabric. This exhibit combines horror and humor in an unusual way. The ‚erection‘ as a post-mortem phenomenon is trivialized by the use of everyday items like a plastic bag over the head and can frighten the viewer while also making them chuckle.

On Violence and Horror
As I wander through the exhibition, it becomes clearer to me how creatively and diversely themes can be processed. Particularly striking is how present death is in the artworks. For many people, these works serve as a vent to engage with horror in their own, personal way.

The works of Jake and Dinos Chapman take a critical look at mass production and consumer behavior in the food industry. The grim clowns from McDonald’s and the portrayal of animals as victims show the distortion of reality and commerce. Andreas Serrano’s photographs of anonymous corpses offer a disturbing insight into the reality of death, while Mat Collinshaw’s documentaries on execution meals allow for a direct encounter with transience. Kate McGwire questions prejudices with her sculpture made of pigeon feathers. Feathers, considered carriers of diseases, are highlighted here in their aesthetic beauty. Thu von Trah and Mary Simbande deal with political issues such as the Vietnam War and apartheid in their photographs. They show the associated traumas and effects on generations and society.

Conclusion
The staging of King Cobra shows the acts of violence by the gynecologist James Marion against women. It includes dismembered women’s bodies, hanging like meat in a butcher shop, adorned with pearls and gemstones. This sight allows for an unvarnished reflection on abuse of power and bodily integrity. At the same time, it challenges the boundaries between art and one’s own perception, as one is initially shocked to see meat hanging in the exhibition – and only upon closer inspection recognizes the body parts in it.

I think it’s obvious that I’ve completely immersed myself in the world of nightmares. The works of the exhibition show that horror not only carries fear and terror but also a deeper meaning and fascination. The ‚Death and Devil – The Fascination of Horror‘ exhibition struck a special chord with me. The themes of ‚Death and Devil‘ in art are diverse and multifaceted. The exhibition made me reflect through gloomy paintings and modern interpretations in fashion and music, broadening my view of death and horror. It’s a fascinating and shattering experience that I won’t forget anytime soon. The exhibition offers a deep insight into the diverse possibilities of contemporary art to question societal norms and open new perspectives on familiar topics. The shocking, provocative, and sometimes disturbing works stimulate discussion about life, death, identity, and social realities.

Despite my initial skepticism, I am glad I visited the exhibition. The portrayal of death and the devil and the explanations of the fascination with this topic completely exceeded my expectations. I was shocked and at the same time surprised. Maybe I’ll give horror movies and metal a second chance. Also, I’m going home with a good feeling, fortunately not feeling like I’m in a horror movie.

Taxiteller & Adorno: Schlussverkauf Bildung Konferenz in Oer-Erkenschwick25.
