Man stelle sich vor, man kommt morgens v\u00f6llig gl\u00fccklich und zufrieden in die Hochschule in Dieburg. Ein seltenes Ph\u00e4nomen, immerhin ist es Dieburg. Man ist ein wenig fr\u00fcher als sonst da, weil man noch die Zeit nutzen wollte, um zu arbeiten. Das Seminar beginnt normalerweise um 8:30 Uhr, heute soll es jedoch eine Viertelstunde sp\u00e4ter losgehen. Also setzt man sich in den Unterrichtsraum und f\u00e4ngt an zu schreiben. Das liegt im Journalismus-Studium in der Natur der Sache.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jetzt stelle man sich au\u00dferdem vor, dass man zu dritt in diesem Lehrraum sitzt. Zwei \u00fcbermotivierte Studis und ein fanatischer Kettenraucher, der die extra Viertelstunde noch einmal nutzen m\u00f6chte, um sich m\u00f6glichst viel Teer in die Lunge zu kleistern. Der Kettenraucher ist einer deiner engsten Freunde. Rauchen kann er um die Uhrzeit und bei dem regnerischen Wetter aber auch allein. Er l\u00e4sst seinen Laptop und sein Portemonnaie zur\u00fcck, um seine morgendliche Dosis Rauch zu bekommen. Ein wichtiges Detail in dieser kleinen Geschichte. Euer enger Freund verl\u00e4sst den Raum, schlie\u00dft die T\u00fcr und geht. Gute 15 Minuten sp\u00e4ter fangt ihr an, euch zu wundern, warum er nicht wieder zur\u00fcck ist. Vielleicht hat er seinen Studiausweis zum \u00d6ffnen der T\u00fcr in seinem Geldbeutel vergessen? Ihr steht auf, geht zur T\u00fcr und schaut, ob er eventuell drau\u00dfen davor gestrandet ist. Doch anstatt eurem Freund h\u00f6rt ihr nur ein sehr dumpfes Surren. Ein Surren, das kaum wahrnehmbar einem Alarm \u00e4hneln k\u00f6nnte. Ihr dreht euch wieder in euren Raum und schaut eure Kommilitonin an, die seit zwanzig Minuten mit euch dort sitzt und ebenfalls schreibt. \u201cH\u00f6rst du das auch?\u201d \u201cWas jetzt?\u201d \u201dNa dieses seltsame Surren. Denkst du, dass das ein Alarm ist?\u201d \u201cNee. Das ist viel zu leise\u201d. Ihr denkt also nichts B\u00f6ses, beschlie\u00dft aber mal auf eurem Handy nachzuschauen, ob es es Neues von der Raucherfront gibt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zwei verpasste Anrufe. F\u00fcnf Nachrichten auf WhatsApp. Ein Bild mit Feuerwehrleuten im Treppenhaus des Geb\u00e4udes, in dem ihr sitzt und ein dramatisches \u201cIhr m\u00fcsst da raus\u201d klingen dann doch nicht mehr so harmlos, wie erhofft. Aber man wird uns hier nicht vergessen haben, denkt ihr euch. Ihr schaut eure Kommilitonin an, erz\u00e4hlt ihr, welche vielsagenden Nachrichten auf eurem Handy eingegangen sind und sagt: \u201cEs ist bestimmt ein Probealarm. Aber ich glaube, dass wir dann langsam mal raus sollten.\u201d Ihr packt eure Sachen, du nimmst auch die deines Raucherfreundes mit und ihr verlasst den Raum. Ihr geht durch die gro\u00dfe Fl\u00fcgelt\u00fcr des Flures. Als du heraustrittst, h\u00f6rst du den Alarm dann endlich auch laut und deutlich. Ihr geht das Treppenhaus herunter und h\u00f6rt ein lautstarkes und wenig beruhigendes: \u201cWAS MACHT IHR DENN HIER, DAS GEB\u00c4UDE IST SEIT 20 MINUTEN VOLLST\u00c4NDIG EVAKUIERT UND GESPERRT!!!\u201d – irgendwie weniger cool. Aber so passiert am 22.05. in Dieburg. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Im Keller des Geb\u00e4udes F16 war es w\u00e4hrend Bauarbeiten zu einer gr\u00f6\u00dferen Rauchentwicklung gekommen, welche die Brandmeldeanlage ausgel\u00f6st hatte. So weit, so schlecht  – wenn auch ungef\u00e4hrlich. Die Brandmeldeanlage machte genau das, was sie sollte. Die Sicherheits- und Brandschutzt\u00fcren im Geb\u00e4ude schlossen automatisch und der Alarm machte lautstark darauf aufmerksam, dass sich hier niemand mehr aufhalten sollte. Also \u00fcberall, au\u00dfer eben in dem Raum, in dem du bis eben noch gesessen hast. Was mir am Anfang noch recht witzig vorkam, wurde dann doch relativ schnell ernst: Was w\u00e4re, wenn es wirklich ernsthaft gebrannt h\u00e4tte? So richtig mit Gefahr f\u00fcr Leib und Leben? W\u00e4re , ich ohne es zu merken, im Raum geblieben? H\u00e4tte man aus dem Fenster springen sollen? Warum funktionierte der Alarm nicht oder nur so, dass man ihn in einem geschlossenen Lehrraum nicht h\u00f6ren konnte? Haben wir am Campus jemals eine Brandschutz\u00fcbung gemacht, um zu sehen, was zu tun ist, wenn man wirklich in diese Situation kommt? <\/strong>Warum l\u00e4uft der Lehrbetrieb in anderen Teilen des Campus normal weiter, wenn \u00fcberall Feuerwehrautos mit Blaulicht stehen? Alles Fragen, die ich nicht beantworten kann. Au\u00dfer die mit der Brandschutz\u00fcbung – denn seit ich in Dieburg studiere, was nun seit sechs Semestern der Fall ist, habe ich noch nie eine machen m\u00fcssen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Auf die scheinbar defekte Alarmanlage in Geb\u00e4ude F16 konnte das Dekanat noch am selben Tag hingewiesen werden. Hier versprach man, dass man umgehend Abhilfe schaffen und die Anlagen \u00fcberpr\u00fcfen lassen w\u00fcrde. Beruhigend! Sollte es nicht erst gar nicht so weit kommen? Auf jeden Fall. Die schnelle Reaktion von Seiten des Dekanats, welches noch am selben Tag auf unsere Anfrage antwortete, macht aber Hoffnung, dass man sich dem Sachverhalt auch wirklich annimmt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imagine coming to the university in Dieburg in the morning, completely happy and content. A rare phenomenon, given that it’s Dieburg. You arrive a little earlier than usual because you wanted to use the time to work. The seminar normally starts at 8:30 AM, but today it\u2019s supposed to start fifteen minutes later. So, you sit in the classroom and start writing. That\u2019s the nature of studying journalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, imagine sitting in this classroom with two other people. Two overly motivated students and a fanatic chain smoker who wants to use the extra fifteen minutes to plaster as much tar into his lungs as possible. The chain smoker is one of your closest friends. He can smoke at this hour and in this rainy weather alone. He leaves his laptop and wallet behind to get his morning dose of smoke. An important detail in this little story. Your close friend leaves the room, closes the door, and goes. A good 15 minutes later, you start to wonder why he hasn\u2019t come back yet. Maybe he forgot his student ID to open the door in his wallet? You get up, go to the door, and check if he\u2019s stranded outside. But instead of hearing your friend, you hear a very faint humming. A humming that could faintly resemble an alarm. You turn back into your room and look at your fellow student who has been sitting with you for the past twenty minutes also writing. \u201cDo you hear that too?\u201d \u201cWhat now?\u201d \u201cThat weird humming. Do you think it\u2019s an alarm?\u201d \u201cNah. It\u2019s way too quiet.\u201d So, you don\u2019t think anything of it but decide to check your phone for any news from the smoking front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two missed calls. Five messages on WhatsApp. A picture of firefighters in the staircase of the building you\u2019re in and a dramatic \u201cYou need to get out\u201d don\u2019t sound as harmless as hoped. But they wouldn\u2019t have forgotten us here, you think. You look at your fellow student, tell her about the significant messages you received on your phone, and say, \u201cIt\u2019s probably a drill. But I think we should slowly get out.\u201d You pack your things, take your smoker friend\u2019s belongings too, and leave the room. You walk through the large double doors of the hallway. As you step out, you finally hear the alarm loud and clear. You go down the staircase and hear a loud and not very reassuring: \u201cWHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE? THE BUILDING HAS BEEN COMPLETELY EVACUATED AND LOCKED DOWN FOR 20 MINUTES!!!\u201d \u2013 somehow less cool. But that\u2019s what happened on May 22nd in Dieburg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the basement of building F16, there was significant smoke development during construction work, triggering the fire alarm system. So far, so bad \u2013 albeit not dangerous. The fire alarm system did exactly what it was supposed to do. The safety and fire doors in the building closed automatically, and the alarm loudly indicated that no one should stay here. Everywhere, except in the room where you were sitting until a moment ago. What seemed quite funny at first quickly became serious: What if there had been a real fire? A serious one with a danger to life and limb? Would I have stayed in the room without noticing? Should we have jumped out the window? Why didn\u2019t the alarm work, or only in such a way that you couldn\u2019t hear it in a closed classroom? Have we ever had a fire drill on campus to see what to do if you really find yourself in this situation? Why does teaching continue in other parts of the campus when there are fire trucks with flashing lights everywhere? All questions I can\u2019t answer. Except the one about the fire drill \u2013 because since I\u2019ve been studying in Dieburg, which has now been for six semesters, I\u2019ve never had to participate in one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dean\u2019s office was informed about the apparently defective alarm system in building F16 on the same day. They promised to take immediate action and have the systems checked. Reassuring! Should it not come to this in the first place? Absolutely. But the quick response from the dean\u2019s office, which responded to our inquiry on the same day, gives hope that the matter will be addressed seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
