English version (automated translation):

„I should have run by then“ – Marie on her toxic relationship

by Sarah Wagner-Borst (10.07.2024)

„For me, a toxic relationship is like being in a fun house: Somehow there are parts where you want to puke all over everything or you’re afraid of going through somewhere. The funny thing is that sometimes it was fun and not everything sucked, but you were still trapped. When you’ve packed everything in at the end, you still feel a bit sick, but suddenly everything was somehow calm, as if someone had finally pressed pause. It was toxic for me to throw everything that used to be important to me overboard for this person and simply let go of what made me who I was. I let him mold me completely, no matter what he wanted, and I don’t think that’s what a non-toxic person asks of you.“

These are the words of Marie, who is 21 years old and is currently studying social work in Darmstadt. Five years ago, she was trapped in a toxic relationship and split up with her ex-boyfriend in mid-2021. At the beginning of their relationship, Marie was just 16 years old and her boyfriend at the time was 25 – almost nine years of age difference. Marie describes her relationship at the time as „dependent“ and „unhealthy“, but above all she was afraid. Fear of the unknown, fear of her ex-boyfriend’s unpredictability. Fear of being locked in her room again. Afraid that he would go through her cell phone and find something he didn’t like. Above all, it was „exhausting“, „nerve-wracking“ and „shitty“. Another feeling that the young woman describes is the feeling of tiredness, of always being alert and never being able to get a good night’s sleep.

She says that a few years ago, when she talked about „back then“, you could still see the fear in her eyes, but today it’s different. Today she sits in front of me, confident and strong. Marie tells her story in a clear and firm voice: „I think I was in a toxic relationship because I pushed everything away from me. I thought it couldn’t happen to me and that he wasn’t so toxic, just a bit broken. I thought I had to heal him or at least help him, be there for him. But I don’t think I have helper syndrome, I just wanted to hold on to what was nice at the beginning of the relationship.“

Marie tells the story of how she got to know him: „We met at a funfair and then we somehow arranged a date via Snapchat. But he said from the start that he could never be with me because I was far too young. And that he had to wrestle with himself to write to me because he found it so disgusting to write to someone so much younger, but just couldn’t help himself. Then he saved himself as ‚master and ruler‘ on my cell phone. I should have run by then.“

The student explains that everything seemed normal at the beginning. She was „even“ allowed to go out partying. Her ex didn’t care who she was there with, he just wanted to know how she got home. Gradually, however, behaviors such as obsessive control and prohibitions crept in. However, these prohibitions were never actually enforced. Instead, he always threatened: „If you do A and B, you’re a whore.“ „When we were 17,“ Marie remembers, „we moved in together and that’s when it really started.“

At the beginning, Marie doesn’t want to tell her friends or family anything. She explains that she was ashamed of her ex-boyfriend’s behavior. She didn’t want to put him in a bad light. Of course, she kept questioning the relationship, but she stayed anyway. „He didn’t want me to get a tattoo and said it was dirty and would make me look like an asshole. Although he had considered getting a tattoo on his entire arm in the past. Something just clicked inside me and suddenly everything happened very quickly. I was still at school at the time and talked about it with friends a week later. My physics teacher overheard our conversation and talked to me about it after the lesson. I moved out the same day.“ As the student talks about her break-up, a small tear rolls down her cheek. At the same time, she gently wipes it away with her hand and smiles a little.

One of the first things Marie did after the break-up was to get a tattoo. Today, she wears the angel proudly under her skin. Even if she wouldn’t have the motif engraved today, the angel gives her a lot of strength.

Contrary to what it often seems, the worst was not over after the break-up. The feeling of being constantly pursued accompanied Marie for a very long time. This feeling was intensified by the constant appearance of her ex-boyfriend. By trying to contact her again and again, no matter how, through friends or at work. Marie also found her own development particularly difficult: „These toxic characteristics that you take on from a person like that. First as a defense and then they’re somehow inside. First recognizing that and then changing it. Getting rid of these patterns of behavior was hardcore.“

One of these behavioral patterns, for example, was arguing. „First of all, getting back to arguing respectfully was just crass. At the beginning, I didn’t even realize why my new boyfriend wasn’t shouting at me or insulting me. Then I usually provoked people to the point where I ended up getting the reaction I was used to, which was just antisocial.“ Marie says that she still has problems with it sometimes, but that it has gotten a lot better. It was simply a lengthy process to eventually get rid of these habits that helped her to „survive“ back then.

Her family was an important anchor in the time after the separation. She would never have managed without them. It was also particularly important to come to terms with herself and not continue to close her eyes.

Marie met her new boyfriend in January 2022. She nods with complete certainty as she talks about him: „Top, the bet is on.“ The two moved in together in March of this year. When you enter her new apartment, there is a letter from her grandparents hanging on a mirror, which they gave her when she moved in. The happy student reads it aloud, beaming: „Home is a feeling of freedom and contentment, home is where you feel safe and secure.“

„I think I’ve found my home,“ she adds after a short pause and grins.

Taxiteller & Adorno: Schlussverkauf Bildung Konferenz in Oer-Erkenschwick25.
