Darmstadt: Studentisch, klein und heimisch \u2013 Ein Erfahrungsbericht<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Zum Studienstart geh\u00f6rt bei vielen angehenden Studierenden ein Ortswechsel dazu. Raus aus Hotel Mama und der bekannten Umgebung, rein in die eigenen vier W\u00e4nde und in eine neue Stadt. So auch f\u00fcr den 21-j\u00e4hrigen Justus Kress aus D\u00fcsseldorf. Pauline D\u00f6rrich hat f\u00fcr ach_dasta mit ihm \u00fcber seine erste Zeit in Darmstadt gesprochen. War es leicht, sich in der neuen Stadt zurechtzufinden? Und wie ist sein Blick als Zugezogener auf die Stadt im Rhein-Main-Gebiet heute? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dass Justus nun in Darmstadt wohnt, ist eigentlich purer Zufall. Ende letzten Jahres hat er spontan einen Studienplatz an der h_da bekommen. Ein langer Plan mit dem Ziel, irgendwann in Darmstadt zu studieren, steckte nicht dahinter. Im Gegenteil: Darmstadt hatte Justus als Studentenstadt nie so wirklich auf dem Schirm. Nur durch den Fu\u00dfballverein war ihm die Stadt nicht unbekannt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Als er im Oktober 2023 nach Darmstadt zog, um seinen Studienplatz im Studiengang \u201cOnlinejournalismus\u201d anzutreten, hatte er gemischte Gef\u00fchle. Besonders schwer wog die Frage, wie die Leute in Darmstadt so drauf sein w\u00fcrden. W\u00fcrde er Orte in der neuen Stadt finden, an denen Justus sich wohl f\u00fchlte? An seine ersten Tage in Darmstadt kann Justus sich noch sehr gut erinnern: \u201cDer Start war tats\u00e4chlich nicht ganz einfach f\u00fcr mich, besonders in puncto Unterkunft. Es war unfassbar schwer, eine Bleibe zu finden. Sogar so schwer, dass ich am Anfang eine Woche lang in einem AirBnB etwas au\u00dferhalb vom Stadtzentrum wohnen musste.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In seinen ersten Wochen in Darmstadt verbrachte Justus die meiste Zeit damit, sich einen groben \u00dcberblick \u00fcber die Stadt zu verschaffen, um sich zu orientieren. In vielen ausgiebigen Spazierg\u00e4ngen wurde ihm Darmstadt immer vertrauter. Durch diese Spazierg\u00e4nge fand er au\u00dferdem heraus, was er heute so an der Stadt sch\u00e4tzt: \u201cDarmstadt ist f\u00fcr mich wie eine gro\u00dfe Kleinstadt. Alles ist in der N\u00e4he, aber es f\u00fchlt sich nicht wie eine Kleinstadt an. Es gibt alles, was ich brauche, und es fehlt mir im Zentrum an nichts. Darmstadt ist eben studentisch, klein und heimisch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nach neun Monaten hatte Justus einige Spots gefunden, an denen er gerne Zeit verbrachte. Einer davon ist die Mathildenh\u00f6he. Der Blick auf die Stadt, den man von dort oben habe, sei sehr cool und es lasse sich dort wirklich gut entspannen, meint der 21-J\u00e4hrige. Ob Darmstadt aber wirklich die <\/strong>ideale Studentenstadt ist, m\u00fcsse er noch immer herausfinden. Die vielen Kneipen sind allerdings schon mal ein gro\u00dfer Pluspunkt f\u00fcr die Stadt. Die Frage, ob er wieder zum Studieren nach Darmstadt ziehen w\u00fcrde, beantwortet er mit einem klaren Ja. \u201cAber ich w\u00e4re auch von einer anderen Stadt nicht abgeschreckt, zumal ich eher St\u00e4dte bevorzuge, die an einem gr\u00f6\u00dferen Fluss liegen\u201d, sagt er.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mittlerweile hat Justus ein Zimmer unweit vom Bismarckplatz gefunden. Langsam f\u00e4ngt er damit an, die sch\u00f6nen Seiten an der Stadt zu entdecken – ohne den Filter, den er in den ersten zwei, drei Monaten noch hatte. Step by step baue ich so eine pers\u00f6nliche Beziehung zu Darmstadt auf, sagt er. Eine Sache steht allerdings noch immer auf seiner Darmstadt-To-Do-Liste: Sobald sich die M\u00f6glichkeit ergibt, m\u00f6chte der Fu\u00dfballfan unbedingt ein Spiel von den Lilien im Stadion am B\u00f6llenfalltor sehen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tipp von Justus: <\/strong>Allen Newbies in Darmstadt kann ich nur empfehlen, die Stadt in den ersten Wochen zu Fu\u00df oder mit dem Fahrrad zu erkunden. Ich finde, dadurch bekommt man nochmal einen ganz anderen Blick auf Darmstadt.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many prospective students, starting their studies involves a change of location. Leaving the comfort of home and familiar surroundings, moving into one’s own place, and settling into a new city. This was also the case for 21-year-old Justus Kress from D\u00fcsseldorf. Pauline D\u00f6rrich spoke with him for ach_dasta about his first experiences in Darmstadt. Was it easy to find his way around the new city? And how does he, as a newcomer, view the city in the Rhine-Main area today?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That Justus now lives in Darmstadt is actually pure coincidence. At the end of last year, he spontaneously got a place at h_da. There wasn’t a long-term plan to study in Darmstadt. On the contrary: Justus had never really considered Darmstadt as a university city. He only knew the city because of the football club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When he moved to Darmstadt in October 2023 to start his degree in \u201cOnline Journalism,\u201d he had mixed feelings. One major concern was how the people in Darmstadt would be. Would he find places in the new city where he felt comfortable? Justus can still vividly recall his first days in Darmstadt: \u201cThe start was actually not easy for me, especially in terms of accommodation. It was incredibly difficult to find a place to stay. It was so tough that I had to stay in an Airbnb a bit outside the city center for the first week.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his first few weeks in Darmstadt, Justus spent most of his time getting a general sense of the city to orient himself. Through many extensive walks, Darmstadt became more familiar to him. These walks also helped him discover what he appreciates about the city today: \u201cDarmstadt feels like a big small town to me. Everything is nearby, but it doesn\u2019t feel like a small town. It has everything I need, and I don\u2019t lack anything in the center. Darmstadt is indeed student-like, small, and homely.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After nine months, Justus had found several spots where he enjoyed spending time. One of them is Mathildenh\u00f6he. The view of the city from there is very cool, and it\u2019s a great place to relax, says the 21-year-old. Whether Darmstadt is truly the ideal university city is something he still has to determine. However, the many pubs are already a big plus for the city. When asked if he would move to Darmstadt to study again, he gives a clear yes. \u201cBut I wouldn’t be put off by another city either, especially since I prefer cities that are near a large river,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Justus has now found a room not far from Bismarckplatz. He is gradually starting to discover the beautiful sides of the city \u2013 without the filter he had in the first two or three months. Step by step, he is building a personal relationship with Darmstadt, he says. However, one thing is still on his Darmstadt to-do list: as soon as the opportunity arises, the football fan definitely wants to see a game of the Lilies at the B\u00f6llenfalltor stadium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A tip from Justus:<\/strong> To all newcomers in Darmstadt, I highly recommend exploring the city on foot or by bike in the first few weeks. I think it gives you a completely different perspective on Darmstadt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
