So krass.

Foto: Rico Kammel und Yasmin Can

Mittlerweile moderiere ich acht Shows. Was geht hier? Oder warum sind die hier so? Was sind das für Leute?

Crowd Work

English version (automated translation):

From Plan B at ‚Nightwash‘ to a Rising Comedy All-Rounder

by Rico Kammel und Yasmin Can (28.08.2024)

Reda Salahdine is a stand-up comedian and also a host and moderator at Comedyflash. Like everyone, I started with „open mics.“ Eventually, you get invited to a show, which is already an honor. You might get paid 50€ or at least cover your travel expenses, which is pretty amazing because most people do it for free. They do it because they’re passionate about it, and that’s how it was for me. Then I realized I was making progress. I actually studied business administration in Marburg. Now I work in sales, and I’m always networking heavily. I’ve never gone to a show without getting to know everyone or at least the organizers. Connections are very important. I also quickly started cutting and posting videos of my material.

How did you actually start doing stand-up-comedy?
This might sound silly, but it was a childhood dream of mine. I put it off for a long time. I wanted to do it when I turned 16. After high school, I eventually moved to Marburg for my studies. I knew I’d prefer to do comedy afterward. Two days after submitting my bachelor’s thesis, I signed up for an open mic in Frankfurt. I was really nervous to perform in front of 80 people for the first time. My worst fear was that no one would laugh, and I’d just stand there like a professor who’s disliked by everyone. But it went well. I think no comedian forgets those emotions before their first performance. It’s intense.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Last October, “Nightwash” contacted me and asked, “Hey! Someone dropped out; would you like to take their place in the semi-finals?” I hadn’t actually applied to them. I knew I wasn’t bad, but I wasn’t ready to apply to Nightwash. I was still too insecure. But it would’ve been foolish not to do it. So, I was in the semi-finals and then qualified for the finals. I didn’t win in the end, but it was still an amazing experience. It was the first time I was mic’d up for a live recording. And since then, alongside my open mics and my cinema show at the Astor, I’ve been doing the Comedyflash shows. Here in the Rhine-Main area, I host about four to five Comedyflash shows.

How did you get your job at comedyflash?
The organizers from Berlin approached me and asked if I wanted to host the show in Frankfurt. I said, “Sure!” And things took off from there. So, I don’t just host; I also handle all the communication with the organizer or the comedians. I also do the booking for our line-ups.

What’s important when putting together a show or a line-up?
In a typical line-up, you usually have five or six performers. The closer, the last one, is always the strongest. The audience should leave with the best possible feeling. The opener is also very important because they’re the first point of contact after me as the host. Not everyone can do it, because you need a certain level of energy. For example, there are super strong comedians who aren’t good openers because they’re more low-key by nature. At the beginning, you usually place someone who’s louder and more energetic. Another important spot is the first one after the break, which is good for newcomers. The audience has already laughed, and they’re not as picky anymore.

Do you only invite comedians to the show that you personally like, or are there other criteria?
For our open mic, we always try to have at least one woman. That’s also a big topic in comedy. There are far too few women in German comedy. I don’t know why. Of course, I only invite comedians to the show that I’m convinced of. The chemistry in the team has to be right, too. Ultimately, I try to give every newcomer a chance. The most important thing is that the audience has a good time.

photo: Rico Kammel and Yasmin Can

How do you write your own sets?
It’s important to me to write something that sticks in people’s minds. It could be a well-rounded story or just a series of jokes. I often tell personal stories that I wrap in humor. I studied for 18 semesters, always worked, took a gap semester, and so on. I like to tell real anecdotes like Jetset Mehmet or Miami Yacine, which actually happened, because so many people can relate to them. For example, we had issues with Bafög (student financial aid). So, I already know in advance that these stories usually work well with the audience.

So you rely on the audience being able to relate to you?
Yes and no. Some people can’t relate at all. I’ve had performances in shisha bars where I started talking about university. From the back, I’d hear things like, “This bastard thinks he’s better than us!” So, I’ve had those kinds of shows too. Then I know I’m completely out of place with my university material, and I switch to crowd work and ask if the tax office has ever been here… (laughs). I just take a different approach. You need a Plan B, and that’s why I love doing crowd work. It’s always different. I’m now hosting eight shows. The show in Koblenz is completely different from the one in Frankfurt. So, you can always feel your way around. What works here? Or why are they like this here? What kind of people are they?“

Crowd Work
To warm up the audience before a performance and to win over one or two guests, comedians engage in ‚crowd work.‘ With improvised and humorous interactions, if done skillfully, a comedian can lighten the mood.

What do you do when you encounter people during crowd work who aren’t really in the mood for fun?
I pretty much have the power with the microphone, and I’m louder than the person. So, I try not to hurt anyone personally. If I sense there’s a boundary, I just leave the person alone. I’ll ask for applause and then move on to someone else. I don’t want to embarrass anyone. Everyone should have fun. I always try to engage everyone with the art and lighten the mood. It’s really cool when you notice that you start to break through with people. When everyone’s really into it, then it becomes a great show. I think it’s nice when this anonymous crowd gets to know each other a bit. In some of my shows, I’ve even seen people meet and now just hang out together. About three months ago, a group of girls met at our show, and they’ve since attended other shows together. When they come back, that’s obviously a compliment to us.

What if your daily life stories run out? Don’t you eventually run out of ideas?
It’s always about perspective. Also, a touch of imagination. You have to be creative. I haven’t even tested everything I’ve written yet. There’s one story, for example, that I’ve never performed. It’s also a true story with my college buddies Miami Yacine and Jetset Mehmet. It’s a really dumb story: If you want to receive Bafög (student financial aid) beyond the fourth semester, you have to have achieved a minimum number of points. Of course, none of us had met that requirement. Then Yassine came up with the idea of crashing a rented car into ours. We were like, “Are you crazy?” And he said, “No, it’s fully insured, zero deductible, and you can get a few thousand euros through an appraisal.” We discussed this nonsense in our university rooms. Meanwhile, in the next room, there’s a group of German students planning their vacation in Sylt or talking about their internship at Deutsche Bank, and we’re discussing this kind of crap. (laughs) But as a student, you have these problems. Eventually, you run out of topics. That’s why you also see comedians whose humor changes over time. Kaya Yanar doesn’t do what he used to do anymore. Topics change as you get older. You just have to go along with that.

Do you want to make people think?
Whether I want to make people think, I’m not sure, but from my perspective, the funniest comedian is the one who’s the most authentic. However, I don’t go into a show with the mission of making the audience think. For example, with the Sylt topic, many people spoke up. And I also did because I found it so trivial. At a show, I started singing that song, and you could see unrest spreading in the audience because everyone was wondering what was going to happen next. It wasn’t scripted, nothing. It just bothered me that everyone was posting it, and it felt like the whole country had an earworm. Then, as a joke, I said, “I sing it myself all day, went to the airport, threw away my passport, and flew back to Morocco.” It was a predominantly white audience, but they laughed. You have to be careful with that. I usually like to throw out the things that just come to mind.

How do you get better on stage? What’s your process?
To get better, you have to bomb. No one improves by always playing their best material. An older comedian once told me, “Believe me, you’ll eventually stop playing your favorite material because you just don’t feel it anymore.” I had that moment right after Nightwash because I focused on it so much. Within two weeks, I rehearsed the material twelve times because I really wanted to nail it. And then Nightwash happened, which was fun. But afterward, I thought, “I don’t want to play this anymore because I know exactly when the audience will laugh, when the punchlines will come.” It was so overdone that I had to write something new. That’s why I really admire bigger comedians who have a gig every day. You have that standing, but you’re still testing, writing, and going out to perform every day. So, you bomb often, but that hunger must be just as intense. How do most comedians get better? By writing and letting your jokes develop on stage.

Bombing
The opposite of „killing“. When the audience doesn’t laugh or a joke doesn’t land well, a comedian is said to be ‚bombing

What’s next for you in comedy?
I’ve gradually gotten more involved in the event organizing side of things, which I really enjoy. Recently, I was at Scusi in Mainz—a really cool open mic. When I host or moderate, I’m pretty relaxed. I’m just myself, with a bit more or less cheekiness. However, when you’re presenting your own set on stage, you’re done after eight minutes and can leave. If you’ve recorded your performance, you can review it later to see what you can improve. But when I’m hosting or co-organizing, I find it really nice to see the whole event come together successfully. For example, I’m organizing a larger cinema show with several comedians. I’m doing it completely on my own. I’ve never played such a big venue before and never sold 200 tickets. Even though the risk was high, everything went well. The first show sold out right away. The second one sold out again. That was really nice.

Taxiteller & Adorno: Schlussverkauf Bildung Konferenz in Oer-Erkenschwick25.
