Wie Marsha P. Johnson bereits sagte: „No pride for some of us without liberation for all of us.”

However, while the traditional CSD has increasingly evolved into a popular event with a strong focus on visibility and major brand partnerships, many see this as a depoliticization of the original goals of the LGBTQIA+ movement. The alternative CSD in Darmstadt, initiated by the organization Queer Liberation together with Young Struggle, SDAJ Darmstadt, and Seebrücke Darmstadt, counters this with a deliberately political and radical approach. It’s not just about celebrating diversity but also about highlighting and combating structural injustices and marginalization within and outside the queer community.

Sam (he/she/they)* is a member of Queer Liberation Darmstadt and studies Motion Pictures at the University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt. Ach_dasta! author Tari spoke with Sam about the goals and visions of the alternative CSD as well as the criticism of the increasing commercialization and political softening of the traditional CSD. Additionally, the conversation sheds light on how the alternative CSD aims to create more space for all marginalized groups and to bring the roots of the queer movement as a political protest back into focus.

*Multiple Pronouns:
Sam uses he/him, she/her, and dey/them pronouns. For us, this also includes the fight for workers‘ rights, against racism, against imperialism, and other forms of oppression. As Marsha P. Johnson said: „No pride for some of us without liberation for all of us.“ Currently, we are mainly involved in organizing demonstrations, such as the alternative CSD, which aims to provide a leftist alternative to the larger CSD. We also plan events like solidarity evenings to raise funds and host a reading group together with the organization Young Struggle. In the future, we also want to hold more informational events.

Why is there a need for an alternative CSD?
I think I first need to address the origins of the CSD. It was supposed to be an event commemorating the Stonewall Riots, the uprisings in 1969 at the Stonewall Inn, a bar on Christopher Street in New York, where primarily Black trans activists resisted the police. The bar patrons were repeatedly subjected to queerphobic raids by the police and decided one day to fight back. For us, the problem is that this spirit is virtually absent in today’s CSDs. There are hardly any political demands, despite the fact that there is still so much to demand. The police are usually present with their own booths, despite recent leaks of far-right group chats and regular police violence. We also find it wrong that government parties have their own booths, even though they themselves enact queerphobic laws, use queerphobic rhetoric, and support wars and genocides around the world. Many large corporations are also present at CSDs across Germany. That’s why we wanted to create a demo that criticizes these circumstances, avoids advertising for the police, government parties, or corporations, and focuses more on the origins of Stonewall.

What changes do you think are needed in the organization of CSDs?
There is a lot that could be changed for me. CSDs in Germany are very integrated into the power structures of our society. They receive money from cities, parties, and companies. Their goal is to organize a large event with as many people attending and having fun as possible. Generally, that’s okay. However, it would already be a start to deny the police their own booth and to let go of the idea of turning it into just a party. It should be a demonstration that also makes political demands, even if it means having less money for stage programs.

Can both CSDs coexist and serve different roles in the queer movement?
I think that the large CSDs, which are less politically radical, and the alternative CSDs with their more radical demands can coexist, as they serve different needs. The larger CSDs might be more accessible to people who have had fewer interactions with queerness. Nonetheless, this does not mean that it should be overlooked that there is still a lot of discrimination and oppression. For example, more blocks could be allowed that are more political and make more radical demands. This year, we had a smaller leftist block at the CSD and were then asked to stop our calls for solidarity with Palestine because it would disturb other people. I believe that such a coexistence could exist if it were allowed.

Do you feel safe at your events and demonstrations?
One can never feel 100% safe as a queer person because we are simply not safe in Germany. We do our best to provide a sense of safety to people at our demos. We have discussed the awareness concept in advance and set up an awareness team. However, I often feel much safer at smaller demos than at the larger CSDs because the solidarity and unity there are much stronger. At the alternative CSD, there were some hostilities and people shouting when we wanted to hold our interim rally. At those moments, marshals and even participants immediately intervened and tried to protect the demonstration. Therefore, I feel that we can build a network with which we can protect ourselves as much as possible. We cannot rely on the state or the police.

How did the idea for Queer Liberation come about for you?
There was already an alternative CSD in Darmstadt last year, organized mainly by members who are now part of Queer Liberation. We got the idea from the alternative CSD in Mainz. At that time, we were the Stonewall Alliance from various organizations and individuals in Darmstadt and thought that we definitely wanted to organize similar actions again. On the anniversary of Malte’s death, we held a demonstration, and then the logical next step was to found our own organization because it simplifies the structures significantly. Thus, Queer Liberation was founded. Our main goal was simply to create a safer space for queer leftist people.

Anniversary of Malte C.’s Death:
25-year-old trans man Malte C. was killed in 2022 at the Christopher Street Day in Münster while trying to protect participants from the aggression of an attacker who had previously insulted them with queerphobic remarks. I know that the threshold to join an organization is often very high. However, it really helps to have a community that can assist in coping with the fears and worries about the state of the world. It is also important not to be intimidated and to remain radical in the fight against fascism. Only if we organize can we create a large, leftist, and class-conscious movement that advocates for a better system and defeats fascism once and for all.

Taxiteller & Adorno: Schlussverkauf Bildung Konferenz in Oer-Erkenschwick25.
