Was versucht man also umzusetzen?

Jede:r Einzelne von uns muss was machen.

It allows us to express ourselves. We experience moments in it and attach memories to garments. Fashion can make history: Coco Chanel’s „little black dress“ or the eccentric creations of fashion icon and activist Vivienne Westwood. Her glittering orb symbol—combining a royal apple with a Saturn ring to represent past and future—continues to adorn bags, clothing, and popular jewelry to this day.

„Buy less, choose well, make it last!“ Vivienne Westwood urged. Her environmental consciousness repeatedly inspired the fashion industry. Westwood was adamant about not opening more stores to avoid producing more clothing. Since the 1970s, her one and only store, “World’s End,” has stood in London. She also hired people committed to helping her use eco-friendlier materials because, as she put it, „nobody needs all this.“

The Dark Side of the Textile Industry

Today, a throwaway culture has developed, reeking of overconsumption and exploitation. Fashion becomes outdated within weeks, replaced by new trends. Since the 2000s, fashion consumption has nearly doubled, while clothing prices have dropped by 70%. These numbers might not mean much at first glance. Let’s break it down: every second, a truckload of clothing is destroyed, according to EU studies. A garment worker in Bangladesh earns 46 euros a month—nowhere near enough for a basic standard of living. A t-shirt would need to cost only 1.57 euros more for a worker to earn a living wage. Fifty-five people are involved in producing a single t-shirt. These workers are often exposed to toxic chemicals, endure abysmal wages, have barely any breaks, and work over 12 hours a day.

The tragic collapse of the Rana Plaza textile factory in Bangladesh on April 24, 2013, claimed over 1,000 lives. Carry Somers, co-founder of Fashion Revolution, recalls: „Activists had to dig through the rubble for clothing tags to prove which brands were manufacturing there. That made me realize how invisible the workers were and how the lack of transparency and accountability in the global fashion supply chain was costing lives.“

No Signs of Improvement?

What has changed since then? Things have worsened. When the minimum wage in Bangladesh increased, factory costs rose, and workers’ wages dropped by more than 8%. The environmental cost of the textile industry remains immense.

Fiber and yarn production can involve either natural or synthetic materials. Natural fibers, such as cotton, consume vast amounts of water and are treated with highly toxic pesticides. Producing a single cotton shirt requires 2,700 liters of water. That’s more water than you could drink in a lifetime. On closer inspection, cotton is not as eco-friendly as it seems.

Then there are synthetic fibers like polyester. The worst thing about polyester isn’t the sweaty jersey someone wears for three consecutive days in summer—it’s the production process. Synthetic fibers are made from petroleum or natural gas, resulting in high emissions, energy consumption, and wastewater production. And no, recycled polyester doesn’t come from old clothes but rather PET bottles. Ironically, bottle deposits are more innovative than recycled polyester.

Greenwashing and the Problem with Big Fashion Houses

So, what’s being done? Fashion activists have their hands full. Circular economy initiatives aim to reduce environmental impact, conserve raw materials, and improve innovation and competitiveness. Emphasis on aim.

Success stories? Hardly. Many major fashion brands focus solely on recycling, leaving consumption and revenue untouched. Greenwashing is the go-to strategy for brands like H&M, Shein, and Zara. Some stores allow you to drop off unwanted clothes in exchange for discount vouchers—a façade that drives more consumption and environmental harm. Greenpeace activists demand real solutions.

A Call for Hope

The EU Commission plans to mandate sustainability and challenge the textile industry. By 2030, only durable and circularly designed clothing should be available, ensuring environmental protection and social rights. However, the timeframe for completely reforming the polluted textile industry is just five years—an unrealistic goal. As a leading nation in many industries, can Germany transition its fashion and textile sectors to be environmentally friendly? It’s unclear. One thing is certain: staying complacent is not an option. We all need to take action. It’s not difficult—spend less and avoid retail therapy as a coping mechanism. Fashion activism isn’t just about resisting societal pressure or chasing social media likes through Shein hauls. Wearing a jacket with a Nike logo doesn’t make you cooler. We’re beyond that phase—it shouldn’t matter anymore.

I, for one, think twice before buying something. Do I need it? Do I want it? If you care about fashion and want to enjoy your passion in the future, you have to change. And we have the internet—don’t waste it on memes or puppy videos. Use your opportunities; otherwise, we’re doomed anyway. Fashion is creative. Fashion is individual. Fashion is expressive. Fashion doesn’t have a clean conscience. Think about it.

Taxiteller & Adorno: Schlussverkauf Bildung Konferenz in Oer-Erkenschwick25.
