English version (automated translation:)

„Got caught“ Part three: Art and Social Media – Do They Go Together?

By Louisa Albert (26.Feb.2025)

Got Caught

Surfing, snapping, typing – since the turn of the millennium, the internet, and especially social networks, have become a unique social space that is now an integral part of our daily lives. The whole world is online, and many of us spend several hours a day on the web. The possibilities of the World Wide Web were promisingly advertised, and billions of people followed the call. Even today, the advantages are clear, yet criticism is growing. Social media addiction, FOMO, greedy tech billionaires, or misinformation – all these aspects cast a shadow over the digital world. Where do people resist the negative structures of the internet? Where should we take a closer look, and how can we find a healthy way to engage with smartphones and more? His posts showcase his artwork—vibrant colors, dreamy lines, shapes, and shadows that confuse the eye. The young art student plays with two- and three-dimensionality, and people love it: last year, he exhibited in London. A gallery had reached out to him—they had discovered him through Instagram. „Instagram is my main medium,“ the 25-year-old says in an interview. „The platform serves as a public portfolio, like a networking tool.“ A tool—that’s what social media has become for many professions. Especially in the artistic field, Instagram & Co. offer the opportunity to showcase one’s work and gain attention. „The entire art scene, all galleries, all artists, and collectors have an Instagram page. This allows for exchange, and many people can discover you without ever having met in real life,“ Jan continues. „That’s what social media was meant to do from the beginning: connect people, build or maintain relationships, even if you live on the other side of the world. That’s something really beautiful.“

Illustration: Margo Sibel Koneberg

That’s when I realized: this is overwhelming me.“

This reinvention of global connectedness and exchange was something Rini Pegka experienced firsthand when the internet and social media were in their early stages. In addition to working as a meditation and yoga teacher, artist, and author, the trained biologist advises self-employed individuals in the field of marketing, with a focus on digital mindfulness. „I was an early adopter of social media,“ she says. „It was an exciting time because we realized we weren’t just communicating in one direction—people were responding.“ But as a self-employed person, she quickly encountered the dark side of the platforms. „At some point, I noticed that it was becoming too much. I was spending more and more time online and couldn’t find peace. That’s when I realized: this is overwhelming me.“ To regain her sense of calm and creativity, she engaged in self-reflection, experimented with meditation, and gradually found a new way to interact with social media. In her work, she has seen that many people share her thoughts. „Especially in my business mentoring for the self-employed, digital media is a recurring topic,“ she says. „People feel overwhelmed. On one hand, by the flood of information that comes at them the moment they open an app, but also by the pressure to constantly post content to stay visible and please the algorithms.“

Between Self-Presentation and Authenticity

Becoming and staying visible on social media is one of the biggest challenges because no one fully understands how the algorithms work. Still, certain formats, hashtags, or sounds increase the likelihood of reaching a broad audience. However, this sometimes requires adapting one’s feed. Rini Pegka explains that many of her clients feel they are losing their „own voice“ because of this. Jan also sees how this pressure affects the art world. „In recent years, social media has led to a massive shift where it’s more about producing content rather than good art. There’s a growing number of artists who are primarily content creators. The product itself comes second because, in the end, what they’re creating is content for social media—that’s how they make their money.“ Artists must therefore weigh the demands of their own work against the desire to be seen on social media. This is something Lena experiences as well. Performing under her artist name Lenny Boo, she sings and writes songs. In 2024, the 25-year-old released her first singles and regularly shares her musical journey on Instagram.

„When I write a song, I usually just sit at the piano, play a few chords, and then a melody or lyrics come to me. But since releasing my second song, I set up my camera immediately and try to create something for social media.“ The pressure to stay visible as an artist while remaining authentic often stifles her creativity. „It’s difficult to find a form of self-expression that you’re truly comfortable with,“ says Lena. „You also want to be social and approachable and not come across as if you think you’re cooler than everyone else.“ Then there’s the skill and time investment required for high-quality social media content. „Especially at the beginning, you’re not just an artist—you also become a video producer.“

Constant Comparison

„It’s important to find out for yourself: how does my social media use make me feel?“ says Rini Pegka. „Do I feel overwhelmed? Do I feel worse afterward than I did before? And if so, then it’s worth considering: what kind of use would be good for me? What do I need?“ She recommends filling screen-free time with intentional activities, otherwise, boredom might lead you right back to TikTok & Co. Lena has come to the same realization: „A friend and I made a pact to practice the piano for ten minutes every day, just for ourselves, so that by the end of the month, we’ll have learned at least one new piece.“

For Jan, his Instagram feed is an essential tool to attract attention and keep up with other artists. However, content creation is not his top priority—he enjoys the privilege of working with a gallery that handles part of that work. „My focus is on creating a strong product in real life, not just something that looks good in photos. Instagram is simply where you can see what I’ve done.“ For him, a bigger challenge than marketing pressure is the constant comparison with others. „That’s the number one issue with social media. When you’re working on your own stuff all the time, you also see all these incredibly successful artists. But I have the same problem in a museum setting. When I visit the Städel Museum, for example, and see all these amazing paintings, it’s overwhelming.“ Rini Pegka emphasizes: „We should never forget that on social media, we usually only see ten seconds of someone’s life, and often, it’s just their best moments.“ Keeping that perspective can help artists be more forgiving of themselves and their daily ups and downs. Engaging with others can also be a way to avoid being too harsh on oneself.

At the end of the day, Jan sees mainly the positive aspects when it comes to his work. „For me, social media is like an extra facet of a person—it’s a reflection of one’s personality, similar to how the way you dress says something about you. Plus, you can directly check out the work of artists you admire or have been following for a while. It’s more accessible, and that makes it easier to inspire each other.“ Especially for emerging artists, social media provides an easy way to share their work. „That’s the beauty of art: if something I create, something that moves me, also moves others in some way, that’s an amazing feeling. It always reminds me of that childhood feeling of creating something and showing it to your mom. Of course, it’s about validation, attention, or affection, but I don’t think that’s inherently bad. What matters is having the right expectations and knowing how to handle it when you don’t receive that response.“

New Possibilities

For many self-employed individuals, social media has become indispensable. However, coaches like Rini Pegka show that what can be controlled is one’s approach to these platforms.
