<\/figure>\n\n\n\nIllustration: Margo Sibel Koneberg<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Frau Fruth, wie sind Sie dazu gekommen, Bonobos zu erforschen?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Ende der 80er habe ich meine Diplomarbeit an der Elfenbeink\u00fcste mit Schimpansen gemacht. Das war die Zeit, als die Bonobos in die Presse gerutscht sind, weil der Verhaltensforscher Frans de Waal ganz aufsehenerregende Artikel dar\u00fcber ver\u00f6ffentlicht hat, wie anders sie im Gegensatz zu Schimpansen sind. Die Schlagzeilen waren dann \u201eFriede durch Sex\u201c oder \u201eDie Hippies aus dem Regenwald\u201c. Es gab aber damals praktisch fast keine Felddaten und dementsprechend galten Bonobos als sehr kryptisch. Das war f\u00fcr uns Biologen ein riesiger Reiz. In diesem Kontext wurde mein sp\u00e4terer Mann darauf angesetzt, Bonobos im Kongobecken zu studieren. Mein Diplomvater, Professor Neuweiler, sagte mir: \u201eDa ist einer, der hei\u00dft Hohmann und der geht jetzt in den Kongo. Er hat bisher aber nur in Indien gearbeitet. Sie haben doch jetzt Schimpansen-Erfahrung. W\u00e4re das nicht was f\u00fcr sie, mit ihm mitzugehen?\u201c Dieses Projekt ist dann meine Doktorarbeit geworden und ich bin auch nie wieder davon weggekommen. Wobei man dazu sagen muss, dass wir die Bonobos am Anfang erst an unsere Pr\u00e4senz gew\u00f6hnen mussten. Das dauert mindestens drei Jahre und ist eine ganz m\u00fchsame Aufgabe, die einem sehr viel Geduld abverlangt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Wie haben Sie es geschafft, dass sich die Bonobos an Sie gew\u00f6hnen?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Wenn man sie wirklich an sich gew\u00f6hnen will, muss man signalisieren Ich bin hier und ich tue dir nichts, insofern brauchst du dich nicht vor mir zu f\u00fcrchten. Dazu geht man immer wieder zu ihnen, macht immer wieder dieselben Sachen und schaut auch, dass man eigentlich immer dieselben Klamotten anhat. Am Anfang ist es so, dass sie eben schreien, Alarmrufe machen und wegrennen. Dann muss man sich wieder hinsetzen und abwarten. Es ist ein Prozess von warten, rangehen, warten, rangehen, warten, rangehen \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n Haben Sie die ganzen drei Jahre im Camp verbracht?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Nein. Am Anfang war die l\u00e4ngste Zeit, die wir am St\u00fcck im Wald waren, 13 Monate. Dann waren wir einmal neun Monate und einmal sechs Monate dort. Seit wir das neue Studiengebiet LuiKotale haben, in dem wir jetzt seit 2002 arbeiten, ist ein Team st\u00e4ndig vor Ort, aber nicht mehr nur wir. Damals waren wir nur zu zweit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Wie lebt man vor Ort im Camp?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Im ersten Bereich hatten wir eine Palmenh\u00fctte. Das hat sich aber schnell als nicht so praktisch herausgestellt. Deshalb haben wir dann zus\u00e4tzlich ein Kuppelzelt in so eine Palmblatth\u00fctte gebaut, damit es vor Insekten und Wetter gesch\u00fctzt ist und nicht so hei\u00df wird. Dann hat man noch ein Solarpanel und eine Feuerstelle zum Kochen und noch eine H\u00fctte, in der man Proviant und Ausr\u00fcstung lagert. Heute sieht es immer noch so aus, nur ist es ein bisschen gr\u00f6\u00dfer, weil das Team gewachsen ist. Da das Camp jetzt permanent ist, hat sich im Laufe der Jahre auch einiges angesammelt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Wie sieht der Tagesablauf im Camp aus?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Die Bonobos stehen mit dem ersten Licht auf und das hei\u00dft, dass man eben sehr fr\u00fch den Wecker stellt und dann leise dahin geht, wo sie die Nester gebaut haben. Das k\u00f6nnen, wenn man Gl\u00fcck hat, eine Stunde, wenn man Pech hat, bis zu drei Stunden sein, die man l\u00e4uft. Dann setzt man sich in der N\u00e4he hin und wartet, bis sie aufwachen und aufbrechen. Den Tag \u00fcber geht man mit einem Tier mit und nimmt Daten auf, bis man am Abend wieder in der Nestgruppe ankommt und dann wieder ins Camp zur\u00fcckgeht. Das nennen wir Nest-zu-Nest-Beobachtung. Die Tage k\u00f6nnen sehr lang sein. Von fr\u00fch um drei bis abends um neun Uhr. Das ist sehr erm\u00fcdend. Mittlerweile machen wir es so, dass jeder nur jeden zweiten Tag in den Wald geht.<\/p>\n\n\n\n W\u00fcrden Sie das Camp nach so vielen Jahren Pr\u00e4senz als eine Art zweites Zuhause betrachten?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Das ist es nie geworden, also mein Zuhause. Ich finde es immer wieder faszinierend. Es hat eine tolle Natur und es gibt jedes Mal etwas zu entdecken. Aber ich wei\u00df jetzt nicht, ob ich das Zuhause nennen w\u00fcrde. Zuhause zu sein hat f\u00fcr mich auch etwas mit Zugeh\u00f6rigkeit zu tun und das ging mir dort nie so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Begegnen Ihnen in unserer Gesellschaft Fehlinformationen zu Bonobos, die Sie gerne aufkl\u00e4ren w\u00fcrden?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Bonobos sind zwar friedlicher als Schimpansen, aber je l\u00e4nger wir sie beobachten, desto mehr wird klar, dass es doch einen gro\u00dfen \u00dcberlappungsbereich gibt. In den letzten acht Jahren haben wir Dinge beobachtet, die wir am Anfang unserer Forschung nicht f\u00fcr m\u00f6glich gehalten h\u00e4tten. Gewalt, Verletzungen und Aggressionen, die laut der Theorie bei Bonobos eigentlich gar nicht auftreten sollten. Es scheint aber Treiber zu geben, und wir sind uns nicht hundertprozentig sicher, ob es \u00f6kologische, soziale oder andere sind, die dann Gewalt provozieren und f\u00f6rdern. Was mich absolut fasziniert, ist die gro\u00dfe Frage danach, was es braucht, um solche Aggressionen hervorzurufen und was letztendlich dann auch zu Krieg f\u00fchrt. Als nahe Verwandte von Menschen verwenden wir diese wenigen Menschenaffenarten als analoge Modelle, um besser zu verstehen, wie unsere menschliche Evolution stattgefunden haben k\u00f6nnte. Bei Schimpansen war das immer eine klare Sache und hat sozusagen unsere Macho Gesellschaft damals gerechtfertigt. Die Bonobos haben das dann etwas durcheinandergebracht. Mit der Zeit sehen wir aber, dass manche Bonobos schimpansischer sind, als wir es urspr\u00fcnglich gedacht haben. Es gibt auch Studien von manchen Schimpansen-Gruppen, die sich mehr wie Bonobos verhalten, als man gedacht hatte. Das ist diese Sache, die mich wirklich sehr interessiert. Inwiefern steckt eigentlich alles in uns, vom friedlichsten Menschen bis zum brutalsten \u00dcbelt\u00e4ter?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Woher kommen die matriarchalen Strukturen in Bonobo Kommunen?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Wir haben Vermutungen, aber hundertprozentig k\u00f6nnen wir es immer noch nicht sagen. Eine m\u00f6gliche Erkl\u00e4rung ist, dass diese Genitalschwellung, die Fruchtbarkeit signalisiert, bei den Bonobo Frauen zu einem Drittel eine falsche Information ist. Das ist bei Schimpansen Frauen anders und hei\u00dft nat\u00fcrlich, dass Bonobo M\u00e4nner ihre Strategien anpassen mussten. Bonobo M\u00e4nner investieren eher in Langzeitbeziehungen, k\u00fcmmern sich um Kinder, investieren in soziale Fellpflege mit<\/p>\n\n\n\n Frauen, auch wenn diese gerade nicht empf\u00e4ngnisbereit sind. Ein anderer Teil der Erkl\u00e4rung ist, dass sich die Bonobo Frauen leisten k\u00f6nnen, viel zusammen zu sein, weil sie in Habitaten leben, die immer genug Futter abgeworfen haben. Wenn Frauen zusammen sind, besteht nat\u00fcrlich auch eine gr\u00f6\u00dfere Chance, dass sie sich zusammentun und sich zum Beispiel gemeinsam gegen Angriffe sch\u00fctzen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sie treten vor Ort nicht nur als Forscherin auf, sondern engagieren sich auch f\u00fcr den Umweltschutz und den Artenschutz der Bonobos, richtig?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Ja, das ist ein ganz gro\u00dfer Teil meiner Arbeit. Wir k\u00fcmmern uns in erster Linie um Artenschutz f\u00fcr die Bonobos. Dazu geh\u00f6rt aber eben eine ganze Menge mehr. Anti-Wilderei-Patrouillen, Gesundheitsversorgung, Umwelterziehung und Bildung generell. Daf\u00fcr haben wir 2011 den Verein Bonobo alive e. V. gegr\u00fcndet. Viele Menschen aus der Gegend partizipieren bei unserem Projekt. Und mir ist es wichtig, auch den lokalen Bed\u00fcrfnissen, Traditionen und kulturellen Eigenheiten zu folgen, weil es eben nicht mein Land ist. Meine Vision w\u00e4re, das Miteinander von Mensch und Tier in diesem \u00d6kosystem langfristig zu erm\u00f6glichen. F\u00fcr mich ist der Mensch ein Teil von diesem \u00d6kosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Was haben Sie f\u00fcr sich pers\u00f6nlich aus der Arbeit mit den Bonobos mitgenommen?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Die Bonobo M\u00fctter sind fantastisch! Die haben mir etwas vorgelebt, was man in unserer Gesellschaft nicht so h\u00e4ufig sieht. So eine v\u00f6llig entspannte Kindererziehung sag ich jetzt mal. Erziehung muss man schon fast in Anf\u00fchrungsstriche setzen. Ich glaube, die erziehen gar nicht. Sie lassen es einfach laufen (lacht<\/em>). Das fand ich immer ermutigend. So nach dem Motto: Na, das kannst du auch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n W\u00fcrden Sie sich als Feministin bezeichnen?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Wir m\u00fcssten daf\u00fcr vielleicht erst mal definieren, was jede von uns unter dem Begriff \u201eFeministin\u201c versteht. Feminismus als M\u00e4nnerfeindlichkeit, nein, das bin ich nicht. Mir ist aber durchaus bewusst, dass die traditionelle Sicht der Dinge, also die patriarchalische Gesellschaft, die Wurzel allen \u00dcbels ist und Schuld an der Ungleichheit auf diesem Planeten hat. Das ist etwas, gegen das ich ganz massiv vorgehe. Es macht mich gl\u00fccklich, dass es mittlerweile deutlich mehr Frauen in F\u00fchrungspositionen gibt und man in verschiedenen L\u00e4ndern Frauen als Pr\u00e4sidentinnen sieht. Ich glaube, dass das der Welt guttut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Aus meiner Perspektive heraus gesprochen, w\u00fcrde ich sie dann schon als Feministin betrachten.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Ok, gut. Dann machen wir das. (lacht<\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Was w\u00e4re Ihr Wunsch an die Zukunft?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Also f\u00fcr mich ist es einfach Gleichberechtigung. Wenn man Gleichberechtigung richtig denkt, dann muss es auf alles angewendet werden. Egal, ob das die sexuelle Orientierung, die Hautfarbe oder die finanzielle Ausstattung ist. Wir m\u00fcssten uns eigentlich fragen, was es braucht, damit wir dahin kommen, wo wir eigentlich hinwollen und unsere Vision realisierbar wird. Ich glaube, das ist gar nicht so viel. Da braucht es eigentlich blo\u00df den t\u00e4glichen Versuch zu sagen, mein Gegen\u00fcber ist ein Mensch, so wie ich, und was ich nicht m\u00f6chte, dass man mit mir macht, mache ich auch nicht mit dem Menschen, der mir gegen\u00fcbersteht. After studying biology at LMU Munich, she first researched chimpanzees in the Ivory Coast for her diploma thesis before beginning her work with bonobos in the Congo Basin in 1990, which became the subject of her doctoral dissertation. In 2001, together with her husband Gottfried Hohmann, she established the LuiKotale Bonobo Project, which they have led ever since, enabling continuous observation of bonobos in the wild. At first, we had a palm hut, but that turned out to be impractical. So we set up a dome tent inside a palm leaf hut to protect against insects, weather, and heat. We also had a solar panel, a cooking fire, and another hut to store provisions and equipment. Today, it\u2019s still similar, just a bit bigger because the team has grown. Since the camp is now permanent, quite a lot has accumulated over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bonobos get up at first light, which means setting the alarm very early and quietly heading to where they\u2019ve built their nests. Depending on your luck, that can mean walking one hour\u2014or up to three hours. Then you sit nearby and wait for them to wake up and move off. You follow an individual throughout the day, recording data, until you return to the nesting group in the evening and then head back to camp. We call this nest-to-nest observation. The days can be very long\u2014from three in the morning until nine at night. It\u2019s very exhausting. By now, we make sure that each person only goes into the forest every other day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No, it never became that\u2014my home. I still find it fascinating every time. It has incredible nature, and there\u2019s always something new to discover. But I don\u2019t know if I\u2019d call it home. For me, being at home also has something to do with belonging, and I never felt that there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bonobos are indeed more peaceful than chimpanzees, but the longer we observe them, the clearer it becomes that there\u2019s a significant overlap. In the past eight years, we\u2019ve seen things we never thought possible at the start of our research: violence, injuries, and aggression\u2014which, according to theory, shouldn\u2019t happen in bonobos. But there seem to be triggers, and we\u2019re not 100 percent sure whether they\u2019re ecological, social, or other factors that provoke and foster violence. What absolutely fascinates me is the big question of what it takes to spark such aggression\u2014and what ultimately leads to war. As close relatives of humans, we use these few great ape species as analog models to better understand how our own human evolution might have taken place. With chimpanzees, it was always clear and justified, so to speak, our macho society at the time. Bonobos shook that up a bit. Over time, we see that some bonobos are more chimpanzee-like than we originally thought. And there are also studies of some chimpanzee groups that behave more like bonobos than expected. That\u2019s what really interests me: to what extent is everything in us, from the most peaceful human to the most brutal wrongdoer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We have some hypotheses, but we can\u2019t say for sure. One possible explanation is that the genital swelling that signals fertility in female bonobos is, in about a third of cases, false information. That\u2019s different in chimpanzee females and means bonobo males had to adapt their strategies. Bonobo males invest more in long-term relationships, care for children, and invest in social grooming with females even when they\u2019re not fertile. Another part of the explanation is that bonobo females can afford to spend a lot of time together because they live in habitats that always provided enough food. When females are together, there\u2019s naturally a greater chance they\u2019ll band together, for example, to defend against attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yes, that\u2019s a big part of my work. Our primary focus is on the conservation of bonobos. But that involves a lot more: anti-poaching patrols, healthcare, environmental education, and general education. For that, we founded the Bonobo alive e. V. association in 2011. Many people from the local area participate in our project. And it\u2019s important to me to also respect local needs, traditions, and cultural specifics, because after all, it\u2019s not my country. My vision is to enable long-term coexistence between humans and animals in this ecosystem. For me, humans are part of this ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bonobo mothers are fantastic! They\u2019ve modeled something for me that you rarely see in our society\u2014such completely relaxed parenting, I would say. You almost have to put \u201cparenting\u201d in quotation marks. I don\u2019t think they really parent at all. They just let things run their course (laughs<\/em>). I always found that encouraging\u2014like, \u201cHey, you can do that too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We might first need to define what each of us means by \u201cfeminist.\u201d Feminism as hostility toward men\u2014no, that\u2019s not me. But I\u2019m very aware that the traditional, patriarchal view of things is the root of all evil and responsible for inequality on this planet. That\u2019s something I actively oppose. It makes me happy that there are now significantly more women in leadership positions and that we see women presidents in various countries. I believe that\u2019s good for the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me, it\u2019s simply equality. If you think about equality properly, it has to apply to everything\u2014whether it\u2019s sexual orientation, skin color, or financial background. We should really ask ourselves what it takes to get where we want to go and make our vision achievable. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s that much. All it really takes is the daily effort to say: the person in front of me is a human being, just like me, and what I don\u2019t want done to me, I won\u2019t do to the person standing opposite me. If everyone lived that way in their own small sphere, then we could get where we want to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
